Phil began his karate
training at the Newcastle University Karate Club in
1979, with Barry Seward and then also with Tommy Pearce
at the YMCA. He trained and graded regularly with Sensei
Asano of SKI-GB, first at his regular three-monthly
training weekends in Newcastle, and subsequently at
Carlton Forum or Chilwell Olympia in Nottingham.

Sensei Phil Heron rd Dan
After moving to
Leeds with work in 1986, Phil joined the
newly-formed Kirkstall Karate Club. However,
within two years the club instructor Mike
Skribic had moved to Hong Kong and Phil was left
to run the club.
Realising he needed
additional personal training, Phil asked Albert
Hampson (the SKI-GB secretary) for his advice.
Albert strongly recommended training with Sensei
Anne Hastings in Knaresborough and after his
first visit in 1998, Phil has trained there
regularly.
After running
Kirkstall Karate Club for 15 years, Phil left in
2003 to concentrate on training at Mirai.
Phil has three
children, one of whom is also a dan grade at
Mirai.
